Splinter Cell Chaos Theory

The Splinter Cell games enjoyed massive success during their run in the early to mid-2000s. These strict stealth games masterfully delivered the fantasy of being a super-secret spy going about dangerous missions. The last entry in the series came in the form of 2013's Splinter Cell: Blacklist which sold poorly, and as a result, fan-favorite Sam Fisher has been nowhere in sight.

That being said, those who have played these games still consider them to be some of the best stealth games to date, with good reason. Splinter Cell might not be getting another entry for some time, but a feature-rich remaster of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, for the new consoles could get the hearts of fans pumping once again.

Splinter Cell: Chaos theory is considered by many fans to be one of the best in the franchise. Earlier games in the series had a couple of design issues that make these games inaccessible for newer players to pick up, while later games diverged quite a bit from the strict stealth roots that made the series popular in the first place.

Most importantly, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory has aged really well over the years, and its remaster could very well find itself in some of the best video game remasters if executed properly. Graphically speaking, it holds up, and while the story involved may not be the most intriguing, the levels featured in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory are worthy of remastering. The game may only feature a total of 10 levels, but that's only because there's no filler content. Every level is an open-ended sprawling playground curated for hardcore players, and every level has a bunch of secondary objectives and alternate paths that bolster their replayability.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory also came with a unique multiplayer mode, called Spies vs Mercs. This mode would pit two teams against one another with the mercs having heavy weaponry for taking out the nimble spies as they co-ordinate to complete their objectives. Although this mode was also present in the earlier Splinter Cell games, many fans believe the Chaos Theory version to be the most definitive version of the mode. Servers for this mode were shut down long ago, and a remaster with this game mode included is sure to spark interest in both long-time and new fans alike.

Could Serve As A Proving Ground For Series Success

Since Splinter Cell: Blacklist didn't sell according to Ubisoft's expectations, the series was put on hold as the company poured more and more of its resources into its newer franchises. The open-world craze started to begin and, with it, more and more developers aspired to create bigger and bigger worlds with a huge check list of things to do and collect.

Live service games like Rainbow Six Siege have garnered massive success on behalf of their regular content updates, which has prompted more developers to jump into these genres to rake in the continuous flow of sales. Strictly stealth focused games are few and far between, and almost none of them has really captured the charm of the Splinter Cell series since then. A remaster of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory could serve to show the publisher the potential and fandom of the series, which in turn could return the signal of this beloved stealth series that has unfortunately remained in the shadows for far too long.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is available for PC, PS2, PS3, Xbox, and Xbox 360.

Read below to know more about this game’s storyline, gameplay elements, and features.

What is Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory about?

Chaos Theory is the third installment of the splinter cell franchise endorsed by the renowned Tom Clancy. Similar to the storyline of the previous sequels, Chaos Theory too centres around the life and activities of Sam Fisher, who’s an agent working for the third echelon. The game is gruesome and deadlier than its preceding sequels, incorporating challenging combat mechanics and allowing Fisher to kill more people rather than simply knocking them out.

Consequently, Chaos Theory is the first splinter cell game to receive an M rating by the ESRB. Actor Michael Ironside is seen again in this series, performing the role of the undercovers agent Sam Fisher while Claudia Besso returned as a hacker. Let’s now see what the gameplay of Chaos Theory has to offer to us.

Gameplay

While maintaining similarity with the previous splinter cell sequels, developers have made significant modifications and enhancements to the game’s gameplay elements. It’s the first of the splinter cell series to implement ragdoll physics.

Developers have enhanced the AI detection system. In the latest installment, the dead bodies left behind need to be discovered by a policeman or patrolling guards, or security cameras for the alarm to be triggered. This gives scope to players to leave dead bodies in the open. Meanwhile, they try to disable all cameras and kill all NCPs on duty so that the dead bodies draw no attention.

In Chaos Theory, if you are tracked down by an enemy, it will cause the alarm to be triggered. Similarly, when players are close to enemies, enemies also become alert at the sound of the alarm. This allows them to take necessary protections like wear helmets and ballistic vests. However, now in the latest version, triggering frequent alarms wouldn’t end the lives of players automatically. Also, if the Fisher kills residents or soldiers in the process, no longer does the mission end but the Fisher will, however, be severely thrashed. He might even have to cancel a few of his missions. His stats and scores might also be affected due to his carelessness. Players have to make sure no civilian or soldier gets killed in their hands.

Theory

Chaos Theory has added a combat knife to the list of Sam’s combat weapons. The knife can be used in several ways. For instance, Sam could use it to threaten an enemy while interrogating him, killing an enemy in close range or to pierce gas containers, etc. Sam can also resort to non-lethal and lethal measures when ending an interrogation as he pleases. Sam’s abilities have been increased in the latest installment. For instance, now he can break the enemy’s neck or hang them down or choke them even.

Chaos Theory features the 5-7 SC pistol that has previously been seen in the preceding sequels. Though, it is enhanced in the latest installment and features an OCP- optically channelled potentiator. The benefit of this feature is that when the pistol is fired at any electrical device, it disables its functioning or at least causes temporary malfunctioning. In this way, Sam Fisher can disable security cameras, lights, and many other electronic devices.

Sam Fisher also has access to various types of grenades. For instance, the gas grenade, that emits a high amount of CS gas. It effectively makes the enemies unconscious within seconds allowing Fisher to do his job. There’s also a smoke grenade that allows Fisher to hide in a cloud of smoke whenever necessary. Thirdly, a fragmentation grenade is also available that kills whoever is present within its blast radius and sends flying objects that can potentially damage or hurt people in various directions.

Additionally, developers have introduced two gameplay modes in Chaos Theory. New game modes include dusk hunt and deathmatch. The former is about spies collecting disks and then returning them to their extraction point while the latter consists of killing gamers of opposite teams.
